Question: "How should we define success?"
Some of our findings:
"How should we define success" as opposed to "How do we define success"
Should success be defined in terms of failure?
Kinds or degrees of success: An immediate kind of success for completing a task (e.g. wanting to make a grilled cheese sandwich, making the grilled cheese, and being successful at having made the grilled cheese; climbing a mountain). We called this kind of success discrete. Another kind of success takes time, and is more difficult to define. For this kind of success, we tried to find commonalities.
Success may depend on (1) your upbringing, (2) your shared community and culture, and (3) your own experience. Sometimes, it is academic, economic, it involves plans for college and career and family. Sometimes success involves achieving personal goals, and sometimes it involves helping others achieve their goals.
It is a difficult word to define, like other words: Right, Wrong, Good, Bad, Love, Beauty, Justice, Life, Purpose, etc. We tried to work with modifying a basic definition of success as "the prosperous achievement of something attempted." The definition led to further problems about defining 'prosperity' and the 'something' that is attempted.
