The fieldwork for this project was carried out during the winter of 1989-90. A total of 11 weeks were spent out in the field over a three month period. I wrote a small article entitled Analogy as Practical Reason while my fieldwork was still in progress and presented it at the TAG Conference in Newcastle in December 1989 (this short and very partial account was later published in Archaeological Review from Cambridge 1990).

The full fieldwork report, however, was written up over the following year as part of my PhD at the University of Durham, and presented as a doctoral thesis in 1991.

The thesis was published as a BAR report in 2003.

The report is NOW AVAILABLE for free download in PDF ebook version on the home page of this website.

I resisted the temptation to rewrite the thesis. Like any ethnography, it is inextricably bound up with a particular time as well as a particular place. To rewrite would be to shift from a situated perspective of 'being there' to a 'looking back in hindsight' from somewhere else. While a chapter on textual analysis, an appendix and a few unnecessary passages have been taken out, and I have split the paragraphs into smaller units for easier viewing on the web, the ebook version is otherwise a direct transcription of the original 1991 text.
