Through readings, class discussion, and short essays, each week archaeological theory, method, and data will be used to arrive at a better understanding of an issue of contemporary public concern. Issues will include resource and energy management strategies, biodegradation and solid waste management, "they don't make 'em like they used to", the relationship between humans and dogs, ethnic wars in the Balkans and elsewhere, Bill Gate's strategies in the rise of Microsoft, how human self-images have changed through time, and whether or not America is an "Empire".

Each student will be responsible for copying the readings, which will be available from Isabel Bourelle in the Stanford Archaeology Center and/or Jennifer Paris in the ANTHSCI Department.

Grading will be based on class participation and a substantial essay - 10 to 15 pages, pica-sized type, double-spaced and well documented with references - on the archaeology of a particular contemporary issue.
