Michael F. Marmor, M.D., is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, and a leading scholar at the interface of medicine and the arts. He graduated from Harvard College (A.B. 1962) and Harvard Medical School (M.D. 1966). He has been at Stanford University since 1974, where he has done research and clinical work in the field of retinal diseases and retinal physiology, and also been active in undergraduate education through the Program in Human Biology. He has recently helped to establish a program in medical humanities at the medical school, and he serves as History Editor for Survey of Ophthalmology. He has written several books and more than 200 articles, not only about medicine but also about visual aspects of art, history, music and sports. One recent book, The Eye of the Artist (with James G. Ravin, M.D., Mosby, 1997) explored the relationship of vision and eye disease to art. Another, Degas Through his own Eyes (Somogy editions d’art, 2002) looked at the effects of failing vision on the late works of Degas.
