Non-Player Character.

A character in an rpg who is not controlled by a player. This generally means that the character is controlled by the GM, or a participant working for the GM. In the latter case, the NPCs' actions are influenced at least in part based on what is convenient for the flow of the game, and the characters are not fully simulated.
