In some retellings of Arthurian legend, Arthur acts as an intermediary step between the Pagan and the Christian dominance in Britain. He finds himself torn between loyalty to his old-faith sister
Morgan le Fay and mentor
Merlin, and to his devoutly Christian wife
Guenevere.
In the end, his love for Guenevere wins out, and he ushers in Christianity for Britain.
The isle of
Avalon figures heavily in Arthurian legend. A place shrouded in mist and mystery, Avalon is where
Arthur's sword
Excalibur was forged, and some believe Avalon is Arthur's final resting place. In addition, Avalon was home to
Morgan le Fay, whose character was almost certainly based on the ancient Celtic goddess Morrigan.
Avalon and Glastonbury are often equated, even though the former is a place of ancient religion and the latter is very much Christian.
