My name is Brian Nguyen, I'm a sociology co-term. This past summer I was working at a plastic/cosmetic surgeon's office and in one of my classes on social stratification we've looked briefly at the innate inequality stemming from attractiveness. I also watch nip/tuck religiously so in line with this, I think I'm going to explore plastic surgery for the final project, with specific focus on the silicone breast implant.

Outline:

Human Attraction to the Breast

"*"Evolutionary Arguments

"*"Cultural Connotations of Breasts

*********(from Sebastian): I'd be a bit careful here, since a lot of these arguments tend to resort to scientific explanations that aren't really scientific. Evolutionary psychology, for example, offers a fantastic explanation for a lot of these ideas (particularly human sexuality), but trying to locate these arguments in biology is still a bit shaky. Talk to Prof. Shanks or Chris about this, since they're very knowledgeable about this.

Form over Function in the 20th Century

Implant Technology - What?

Principles of Augmentation - How?

Risk

Willingness to take risks

Societal/Cultural Implications

"*"A Chicken or the Egg Question: technology born of society or society born of technology, both?

"*"Cyborg idea.
