Changes [May 15, 2008]
Scott imagesI can fly right into Edinburgh – no need to take trains, ferries, and buses -, there is an extensive and reliable bus system to different parts of town to minimize the distances I have to walk, and the history of the area is every bit as rich, despite the urban rather than rural setting. And, of course, housing is much more abundant and cheaper. And I should be able to update this website everyday if I so choose. So I think it should work out well.
Essentially, from now until my departure, I’ll be reading books on Edinburgh here and collecting interesting stories. When in Edinburgh, I will go to those spaces and explore them physically instead of just historically/fictionally. I’ll be looking at the way history impacts life in Edinburgh, as well as different ways of looking at Edinburgh.
My second change is the purchase of a new laptop – a 12-inch Mac PowerBook – which is much more portable, and should let me bring my computer everywhere and also make taking pictures and organizing them much easier while in Edinburgh and when I get back.
I checked out a bunch of books from the library on Edinburgh – I’m still amazed by Stanford’s library. I almost checked out a novel published in 1867, but I couldn’t bear to throw it in my backpack – I’ll have to go back for it. More on the substance in a few days when I’ve read a bit more.
