Scott imagesGoals:
To present a Project Proposal and review of the literature for studying Sir Walter Scott's relationship with the land of the English-Scottish border through a study of his poetry, prose, and non-fiction from an interdisciplinary framework.
This framework includes, but is not limited to, the disciplines of archaeology, history, English, and art history.
Themes to be examined in the work of Sir Walter Scott include his relationship with the land, chorography, notions of authenticity, bards and “bardic nationalism,” the border itself/borderlands, and contemporary illustrations of his work by Turner and other Romantic painters.
Primary Sources include Scott’s novels The Antiquary, The Monastery, and possibly Rob Roy; his long poems The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Marmion, and possibly The Lady of the Lake; and his non-fiction works The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border and The Border Antiquities.
Other non-Scott primary sources that will be examined include chorographical or antiquarian writings, beginning with William Camden, which influenced Scott’s work.
Secondary Sources range from literary criticism of Scott’s works to background on the antiquarian movement in England and Scotland.
Each work consulted will have a separate page or part of a page on this wiki with notes on how it fits into other sources.
The aim of this project is to explore broadly the works by and about Scott, and to lay the groundwork for a possible future finished paper on Scott.
