The implications of the material past in personal, local and national cultural identity have been foregrounded by the constructions of the heritage industry. A frequent focus in the relationship between past and present, identity is thus a vital issue in any archaeological cultural politics.

The identity of an artifact is also a concern of (archaeological) classification. Whether stable identities should or can be sought has been challenged particularly by poststructuralism.
