Archaeologists may think that they have the past in their hands. It is rather that the past is [not absent], because it is not what it was. And it depends upon a project – taking up some pieces of the mess that is left. In this the past is a future matter. We might also say that time does not flow from past to present, but is a turbulence into which archaeologists reach.
