Giovanna
studies the reception of the classical world in modern western intellectual
history, with a particular interest in the interaction between the scholarly
practices and socio-cultural politics that shape our vision of the past. Her
research focuses on the history of classical archaeology, antiquarianism and
the modern historiography of ancient Greece. She has written articles on contemporary
British archaeological thought, the history of archaeology of Sicily and eighteenth-century
histories of ancient Greece. She is a research director for the project Archives
of European Archaeology (AREA). Currently she is writing a book on the history
of the study of Magna Graecia – the area of ancient Greek settlement in
South Italy – in relation to its place in modern Hellenism.
