Experiencing the Past on an Everyday Basis

This archaeography project, carried out between April 18 and June 16, 2006, examines the blurred lines between the contemporary and the archaic. The lives of the modern residents of the British Isles are intertwined with architectural remnants of the past. Such sites are interacted with in a very functional and casual manner. Many of the landmarks explored below, particularly those at Oxford University, are still working buildings, serving the purposes of their original design. Life runs on fluidly, over and around architectural masterpieces designed by the likes of Christopher Wren. Simply going to the cinema, playing a game of football, picking up a book from the library, the average person, often unknowingly, passes through layers of historical experience. Hopefully, this project sheds some light on how the past is experienced when a modern community is so thoroughly emersed in it.
